Men's Dress Socks Style - Rules or Guidelines?

 Society is built on rules...I prefer guidelines. Some of my favorite guidelines are the half your age plus seven for dating, holding doors for women and speed limits. When it comes to dress socks, you can't break rules, you can only look ridiculous to your colleagues, friends, wife, girlfriend and people around you.
Put another way...don't ruin a great look with bad socks!

Q: What colour dress sock matches my favorite suit?
A: My favorite answer...it depends! A great guideline is to match your dress socks to your suit (or your suit to your socks if you love footwear). That means black dress socks with black suits, navy with navy, grey with grey, etc. Remember, tones of the same colour are fine! Don't fuss about exactly the same colour so long as your socks are a shade darker or a shade lighter than your pants. We'll talk patterns later.
Q: What about matching my socks to my shirt, tie or shoes?
A: Some fashion gurus claim dress socks don't have to match the suit. Again, we're talking guidelines but the safe money is on matching your pants. Make it easy to see that you can match your outfit. When people have to put effort into figuring out what your dress socks match they will default to believing you are style challenged. If your career rewards cutting edge style you could probably wear pink socks, a navy suit with a pink shirt and chuck taylors.
Q: When are patterns appropriate?
A: Patterns are great...sometimes. Build up your dress sock basics first and then branch into stripes, dots or argyles. Follow the same guidelines for matching colour and stick to patterns with a dominant colour scheme like navy stripes or grey with coloured dots. It is a great way to show a little style without raising eyebrows but even this may be too avant-garde for pitching the big deal or interviewing for your next position. Going back to guidelines, I steer clear of real off-the-wall patterns like skulls, stars, sailboats or flames. I would rather see you express your style with a pocket square rather than exotic patterns.
